The degree of coolness of the name. Does it have an interesting origin? Is it exotic? Is it a birth name or nickname? Does the name roll off the tongue? Does it create Maximus vibes?

Contributions

A rating of the contributions the person made to the field of meteorology. Measure of quantity, significance, foundation, and legacy.

Beer Buddy

Measure of how personable and outgoing the person was. Would he/she be someone you’d want to sit down in a bar for an evening over a few beers? Can the individual carry a conversation without returning to any topic related to meteorology? Do they have their own set of darts?

Beard

Beards bring an air of distinguished intellectual engagement. Their shape and density can say a lot about a man’s personality and social tendencies. For the women legends, I’ll skip this one!

Overall Rating

This is not a pure average of the ten categories, but rather a subjective overall rating given the legend’s full body of professional work and my sometimes ridiculous categories.

Survivor

Here I rate the legend’s potential for performance on the reality TV show Survivor. If you haven’t seen the show or are not familiar with it, contestants perform physical and mental challenges to earn immunity (meaning you stay on the show another week) or other rewards like burgers or fun excursions off the island. Key traits for success are good athleticism, sharp negotiating skills, mental strength, and flexibility.

Hobbies

High ratings in this category are for legend’s that have interests outside of their profession. If you’re spending 100% of your time deriving equations and collecting data, then you’re not living. A diversity of interesting activities will raise scores, while hobbies related to meteorology (e.g., home weather station) lower scores.

Rate My Professor

This category speculates on how good of an undergraduate college professor the legend would be. Could he/she teach Introduction to Meteorology effectively? Good qualities include effective speaking, organizational skills, empathy for those who are not a genius, and the ability to transform complex ideas into digestible content that American Literature students can understand and apply.

Online Dating Profile

If this person were alive today and single, how effective would their online dating profile be at attracting candidates? Physical appearance may play a small part, but most of the rating is determined by those other qualities that potential mates desire (for better or worse): prestige, wealth, social status, personality, and ability to carry a conversation with someone who doesn’t know how the atmosphere works.

Athleticism

We know the person is a genius, but can they get a golf ball in the air or school me in one on one basketball? Hand-eye coordination doesn’t translate to good meteorology, but it sure helps to make a well rounded person that can connect with certain colleagues and graduate students.

Youth Potential

Growing up, did the legend have interesting experiences that hinted at their future success in meteorology? High scores are for legends that experienced out of the norm events that ultimately helped shape them into the legend they would become. Low scores would be for persons like me who had a standard education with little notable traits – and made a lava volcano for their 4th grade science project.
